The Guru-shopping Guide

Aaaha. Now that you’ve decided to live a life with meaning, you’ve gotta find yourself a decent Guru.

Doesn’t sound all that hard. Or does it? Actually, to many superstitious Indians, there should be no issue here, because EVERY Indian knows what a Guru is...
According to your average Indian, a Guru is some kind of a guide, or a spiritual advisor or one of the quacks that appear on TV. Don’t get me wrong – there are true philanthropists who operate as Gurus, unfortunately, there’re also all manner of charlatans who do so – be it that freshly converted and zealous Pentecostal freak or the neighbouring Imam whose great-grandfather was converted at gunpoint.
There’re those that are obvious scammers, especially the catholic priests, imams and babas who’re on TV talking shit.

And then you have the supposedly-smart ones. The other day, on SBS, I saw an Islamic freak tell the world about how ‘Islamic’ scientists had contributed to ‘modern’ science. I guess some of us humans were created with a manufacturing defect – stupidity!!!!

This post is about what characteristics to look for in a Guru. To begin with, one needs to understand WHAT a Guru is... Ready?

For starters, get a piece of paper, and in BIG letters, spell Guru  G-U-R-U (No points for correct spelling – it’s not an English word)
Now, read that aloud LETTER by LETTER. That’s right, say each letter aloud and pause for a moment between each sound.

Unless your name is G W Bush it should read – “Gee, You Are You...!!”

And THAT, my friends, is what a Guru does. He or She enables your self-realisation. So now, WHO exactly is qualified to enable our Bhaarathic Moksha-switch?
No one. As a matter of fact, no one can teach you anything. YOU, and only YOU are the REAL Guru as well as the real Shishya. In Creation this form of your SELF i.e. YOU, is Lord Brahma – The Eternal Preceptor (his Shakthi being the very erstwhile Devi Saraswathi).

Then why do we have such a concept? What is the reality that ‘modern’ Indians have embraced that causes them to throng around a politician like Christians and Muslims do?

In English, Guru is known as the planet Jupiter. Does that ring a bell? Anyone who’s read up on Jupiter, or Guru, will tell you that this planet is characterised by its generosity and magnetism.

If Guru were a person, he would give a total stranger a generous and warm treatment (Guru, the planet, is masculine in nature – so feminists -please don’t start). This is pretty much what you’d expect of a Guru – unconditional acceptance and respect.
I’m sure a lot of experts may have varied opinions on this view of mine – but I’ll put it here anyway – there IS a difference between a Guru and an Acharya. The Acharya trains his/her wards in a discipline, a trade or a skill-set i.e. Vidhya such as archery, or battle, and so on. Acharyas themselves are accepted experts in their chosen trades e.g. Dronacharya.

The Guru, on the other hand, is more a facilitator for Thanthrik or higher learning. On occasion, Kalari experts are known as Guru-kk-ll in the parts of the Holy Land that harbor this ancient (and once, secret) art. This is because the Guru teaches his shishyas more than just the physical skills of Kalaripayatteh. The lessons are more about character, values and ethics, as opposed to the skills (which include Marma-Yogam – google that!).

I think the same person may be both a Guru and an Acharya simultaneously, depending on the discipline (many are cross-discipline experts) and the Shishya involved. When the teaching, and therefore the relationship, transcend from a sensory skills-transfer to a telepathic perspective-transfer.

But then, that’s just my opinion, and I should stop before I get rather long-winded.
What I’m saying, I guess, is that it’s important to be prudent and objective when giving putting another person on your personal-Guru pedestal. Such mental structures give other people a ‘back-door’ into one’s own psyche, and this is a situation to be avoided in the Kali-Yuga.

In the Kali-Yuga, many otherwise-nice people will turn a different shade when empowered with control over social sectors or individual people. It’s the nature of the times, and I would say it is preferable to perceive such failures as an omen of the times rather than the failure of Manushya as a creation.

It is necessary to understand that someone who may know more about you about a topic or a subject is not necessarily your Guru. At a higher level, you are your own Guru. You chart out your horoscope before you descend into the human condition per se. On occasion, your Karma may even require you to descend simultaneously into multiple bodies that are related to each other in their respective lives.

Conversely, another person’s Karma may enable him/her to be ‘more aware’ than others in certain respects. This is a Karmic blessing, and has been misused by many a person. Famous examples include M K Gandhi, Hitler, Mandela, R Nixon etc.
The prudent Jignyasu may find it useful to distinguish between a Guru and someone with better awareness or skill.

I’d love to hear your views on this – personal experiences, or conjectures – it doesn’t matter. Go on... put it up, folks. Let’s hear it!
Warmest regards

  4. Dear Rohit,

Indeed, it is a pity to watch our fellow men grovelling at the feet of a backward heritage...

And no, I've never considered any of your contributions to be spam.

Swami Vivekananda's works are quite a read, my friend...

And I suppose what amazed me when I read his works ages ago was his absolute command over the English language... shame that there aren't more like him.

He knew where he came from, who he was, and yet he defeated the enemy in their own language... with no hate, with no frustration. With the power of the Cosmos behind him...

    Aaah. A glorious example indeed.

May I also recommend that you do some reading on Emotional Intelligence? You'll find that it comes naturally to many - but it's worth reading up because dealing with fellow Bhaarathas who're infected can be rather distressing, frustrating and degenerative (am not sure that's a real word - lol).

Keep the good vibes coming, Rohit.

Also, if I may so ask, is it an idea that you put the download location of the Swami Vivekananda PDF for other seekers?

    Warmest regards

  5. Dear KK,

It is my pleasure and honor to facilitate this junction of seekers.

I'm just very glad that Bhaarathas such as yourself are seeking out The Truth...

As for the issue with posting here, it's unlikely to be an issue with IE8, and more likely to be an issue with security settings on your proxy (at your workplace).

However, I am changing the template to something else that Blogspot has on board.

Let me know whether it adds to the problem or improves the situation for you.

    Warmest regards

  7. Namaste Elfie ..

First of all ... Its GREAT to see you back in action !!! It's been such a long wait to hear from you again !! I hope things are well for you now, and things are more conducive at your end ..

It's an interesting topic you have written about this time.. The guru ..

I loved the way you said how Guru says what exactly it spells like : Gee You Are You :D :D
Also, inspite of being one who speaks Malayalam, I wasn't familiar with the distinction of Acharya and a Guru .. with the acharya being one who imparts a particular skill .. And Gurukkal makes a lot of sense now !

I believe I have much content to share here on this topic because of my personal experience.. I will be writing a longer comment which will follow this one soon !

Thank you for your words Elfie !

  9. Welcome back eLFie. I was dying to see new posts and I am glad I checked for updates.

Once I made a visit to SriSri Ravishankars ashram in Canada and I he was answering someone question about "Art of living" followers chanting "Jai Guru Dev" all the time, he mentioned that "Jai Guru dev" refered to ones own mind/brain which is the ultimate guru and that chanting/greeting is to realize that truth.
    Its more clear now.

    thanks,

  10. Sorry for the delay. Work took my time off :)

Here is what I have to share about experience with different Gurus that has played a prominent role in my journey so far...

When I was a kid, I got so awestruck by starwars that I meditated deeply the night I saw "a new hope" movie from starmovies. I experienced a field surrounding my body, being aware of which I could move my elbow in a different way. Years later, I would develop this awareness, to move my leg in a different way as well( I know it sounds weird.. but theres no other way of expressing it ). Star wars made me search in the internet for jedi philosophy. And it wasn't really helpful or whole, and left a lot of unanswered questions.

It was entirely by chance that I came across the Bagavat Gita in the 10th standard. I applied the karma yoga idea in it, and made it top of the school. But I really began to progress, and feel a lot when I applied the idea of vairagya or detachment in my life. With that the way my life changed was simply amazing. However, having tasted some success by the application of BG ideas, I went back to my ordinary ways of life, which didn't involve any Bagavad Gita :)

The interest and the thirst for knowledge in the Indian wisdom came back in the final years of my college. I had taken an art of living course in my summer holidays after 12th standard. I had learned the technique of Sudarshana Kriya. I began to actually do it daily in my final years in college. I also became a vegetarian. And I would search in the internet for stuff to read, anything about the vedas, and the wisdom contained in it. I came across orkut profiles of spiritual people and added them as orkut friends. I was shocked to see people who would write all their scraps with JAI MA KALI etc. Some of them were really knowledgeable. Some were just show off. One of them knew what he was talking about, and would turn out to be very helpful at a future point.

It was through orkut that I came across the website, www.himalayanacademy.com . It was the website of a hindu monastery in Hawaii. It was through one of those orkut forums that I came across this website, and the first time I came across it, I knew this was a thing for the future. On the day of the vishu, tamil new year, I registered for their free daily email lessons about Hinduism. Every day I would get an email portions of three online books written by the founder of the monastery, Satguru Sivaya Subramaniya Swami, the founder of HInduism today magazine as well. Apparently he started the hinduism today magazine, after he had a vision of the future in which everyone would be able to gain access of any information they want for free. The email course taught me everything about Saivism, from the actual meaning of different practices in Hinduism, the core ideas in it, the fundamental idea of Siva, the role of the devas in our lives, the role of the guru in one's spiritual progress, the path of the mystic etc. It CHANGED MY LIFE. I looked at the religion with new respect, and new eyes. It did talk about a subtle nervous system which all of us had (nadis etc), and the actual science involved in it. It was literally a crash course in everything about Hinduism.

  11. Having finished college, I decided to do Higher studies in the US. Every day I would do the sudarshana kriya, and would attend the patanjali yoga school at calicut, also read the emails as a ritual. The acharya in the yoga school knew what he was teaching about Yoga. When I was doing Sudarshana Kriya though, I was hyperventillating at the end of the kriya after doing the entire set of breathing , which wasn't part of the package which I had been taught. Inspite of the lack of information, I would continue to do it. I never felt the connection with the yoga acharya, inspite of the enormous wisdom, knowledge and experience he had. Regardless, I respect him for teaching me hatha yoga.

I also started following astrology, which gave me insights into myself. It was very revealing. It predicted that in a particular period the following year, I would come across very important people related to the planet Jupiter / Guru. More on this later ;)

The best thing about the US, when I had come here was the unlimited internet ( now that is somewhat the case in India as well ). What resulted from that was immersing in youtube to quench my spiritual thirst. I came across youtube videos of Paramahamsa Nityananda, and Dattatreya SivaBaba. THe latter was a tamil siddhar who was trying to sell astrology, rituals at esoteric temples in tamil nadu to the westerners. He was teaching simple mantras through his youtube videos, so that one could attract wealth/knowledge success, to burst karmas etc. The mantras do work ( I literally passed an exam, merely by chanting a mantra :D Because it was an open book exam, and I had all the answers from a previous question paper with me :) ) Sivababa used to inform through his youtube videos auspicious days such as Gurupurnima, Navaratri, so that his students could make use of the opportunity to order rituals to improve the energy and make use of it in our lives. Following his advice, I meditated on Guru Purnima, 11 pm in the night, in a July month, on the moon imagining a vortex. When I did the meditation, some kind of energy descended upon me through my head, pulsing my face. My face was pulsing spontaneously. I had no idea what it was or why it happened. I tried to to talk about this in one of the student forums ( which was basically a case of the blind leading the blind ) , and most of my questions never got answered. And probably I never talked to him or had a conversation with him ( not even a single email ) through this all time, or in simple words this guru was not accessible. Soon I got bored with the mantras, and let go of him.

Nityananda was another youtube Guru whom I started to follow. He was very charismatic. He talked about the Vedic culture, and gave practical techniques to meditate through his commentaries on different Hindu sutras ( siva sutras , Patanjali sutras etc) He was supposed to have experienced Babaji ( as per the promotional video). But he never talked about it. However he was able to give a lot of insight ( that's how I felt at that time ) into a lot of Vedic stories and mythology, the symbology involved in the mythological stories etc. He claimed to have setup an academy for those who were seeking vedic knowledge for free ( that was when he really caught my attention ) , because he believed knowledge should be free. And I would literally become an addict of his videos. I would also go on watching other youtube videos related to science and consciosuness, and other hindu gurus on the internet. The biggest appeal of Nityananda was that he was a Satguru, who was Indian, and was attempting to restore the Vedic Culture back to its supremacy in the land of the Vedas. That would somehow catch up with the "patriot" within me. Regardless, I wasn't benefiting much with all the confusion of different techniques from his videos.

  12. One of the videos I had come across was that of a Kundalini Guru, Guru Swami G. The first impression I had after seeing her unprofessional video explaining kundalini symptoms was, who would want to watch her video. Regardless,I did stumble on her website by chance once, and that was about it.

Now .. the big time period came about in my life.. the time when I was supposed to meet someone very special related to the planet Guru in my life, which basically meant a spiritual Guru. I hoped that it would be Nityananda, and I would receive some kind of symbol from his videos. So I was watching some of the leftover videos in his channel. I fell asleep watching one of his videos, and I had a dream in which I was standing in front of an ashram gate, where there were two guardsmen. They wouldn't allow me to enter the ashram and see Nityananda. However I demanded to them that " by the power of divinity within me , I had to see him". The guards reluctantly had to bring Nityananda to the Ashram gates, and when he arrived, I fell at his feet and that was the end of the dream.

I woke up, and surfed around for a bit, and went to the same GuruSwamiG website, and registerd in one of the yahoo groups of the website. In the website she basically said one to decide within a week if they would like to follow the path which she had to offer. I was kind of confused. So I sought the help of one of my orkut friends, who knew mantra and tantra. He told me that this guru had a golden aura, which meant that she was a satguru, and she will take care of me. I had more faith in his words than my decision at that time :D And the funny thing was, I had a vision during my time before coming to the US, about a bald lady who was also fat at the time of Guruvayoor Ekadeshi at the Guruvayoor temple. At that time it didn't make sense. But now it felt to be serendipity to come across this Guru in the astrological period as well.

Guru Swami G was a kundalini guru, and the path which she had to offer was a kundalini tantric path ( no its not the sexual tantra in case thats the only thing you are familiar with ). I had to let go of all my previous practices to be her student, which meant no more mantras, yoga, prayer etc. She gave a set of simple practices to do, which was a balanced breathing practice , in which you balance the air flow through both the nostrils, an open eye internal chanting of OM THAT I AM , and being aware of the heart center region. One had to live their life from the point of Honesty, Integrity and Transparency. I realized that what I had experienced with my body before were symptoms of an awakened kundalini. The kundalini a conscious energy in the body would attempt to clear all the blockages and would purify the body by bringing to the surface all the junk we have been holding close to within our mind. She advised to eat meat, so as to have some grouding with all this kundalini. She would point blank say all the misconceptions I was holding onto myself - the idea that "I" will "achieve" enlightenment. She emphasized a lot in clearing any kind of confusion on anything about the practices that were given, or on anything else.

What she had to offer was of immense value, as I would realize being with her for a long time. She had the actual experience of realization/non-duality. She could talk from that point. I was able to be in her presence, when she was holding a retreat for the students under her guidance ( about 30 of them from all around the world , most of them with an awakened kundalini ) . I was able to experience deep consciousness shifts merely being in her presence. She wasn't willing to ego massage any of her students, and would tell them exactly what their problem was right at their face. Many of the students whose ego was bruised, She was indeed a realized being, who walked the talk. My search for a spiritual guru ended there.

  13. Once I was convinced of this fact, my attention for Nityananda faded away. Regardless, when a friend told me that Nityananda was caught making out with his devotee, I didn't feel suprised ( inspite of watching over 100s of hours in his youtube videos ). I realized that he was more of a showman, whose talks would begin with a curtain opening up , and a promotional song/video in the background. Apparently he wasn't also accessible to many of his students, except through the #1000 programs/courses. And he was thus a self-proclaimed guru. My guru backlashed Nityananda vehmently in her youtube channel, as he was bringing a bad name for genuine satgurus. And Nityananda's students who were blind devotees, would attack back at my Guru with their illogical arguments without looking at the evidence, to which she would again reply point blank at their face.

I can only thank all the gods in finally putting me in the right hands of a genuine Guru. I consider myself incredibly blessed to have access to one as well.

The story of my spiritual path is long. However, I shared it for the benefit of all. So that one may understand that the function of the Guru is to clear confusion, and to aid you in your journey towards truth. If they are chasing after your money, then you should have a double check. The best way to judge for yourself, is to listen to what your heart has to say ( the only way to know whether you are in love as well ;) ). If your desire to know the truth is really deep, then the universe will finally make you end up with a living Guru. if you find one, you are indeed blessed in this lifetime.

Thank you all for surviving upto this line :) I might actually write a blog about this. It is just too long to be a comment :D I felt the need to share the entire journey so that the readers have a good background on everything that was relevant here :)

  15. Elfie, apologies for that its not the right topic to post my question....
I have this question every time I go through /attend a "pooja" or a ritual / festival / wedding etc. and often see people caught up in procedure rather than "bhakti" or the essence of it.

    - What is the significance of "ritual" or the procedure for any given pooja. While I understand the "symbolism" in certain aspects, why is it so important to have (for example) "red flowers" while performing lakshmi pooja or having "black sesame seeds and or oil" for performance "shani baghvaan pooja" or preparing "pindam" with certain materials like "dharba" when doing "pitru pindam"

    - Does the effect "pooja phalam" ?
    - What aspect of a ritual/pooja should we concentrate on most.
    - How would I know that I am following the correct one (every family or community seem to have their own flavor for same thing)
    - Is this a matter of having discipline in what we do ?
Often learned poojaries explained me on why we do it (and I get it), but I never got right answer on why we follow specific steps(rituals) in certain order. I get the symbolic part, but is there more.

Sorry for posting such a open ended question but I wanted to know your opinion on this topic.

  16. Dear eLFie

I consider myself to be absolutely ignorant as well as knowledgeable at the same time. I have , in past few hours read some of your posts and they have bolstered this confusion of mine....for the past few weeks i have been longing for a guru( or someone who could show some light; to be exact ,give an understandable direction to my thoughts). the ideas of one conciousness, its cycles and the entropy thus produced and that human life purpose is for energy to realize that it is matter are i think my own conclusions. I have been truly amazed, time and again when i discover what are my suspicions or thoughts about the reality of being ourselves are stated by others in words( i probably lack the way of expression).
At other times however i consider myself to be completely ignorant of truth and this causes frustration. Now , I can see this frustration manifesting into other things.
I consider myself to be lucky, and i am not proud of it..i have come to a conclusion that someone is behind me orchestrating these events.
however, i am surely a little afraid of losing this someone, and this fear can be my primary motive of seeking a guru.
But what truly got me started on this search was reading of a book "aghora". The concept about quantum physics that you have stated in another post had led me to a somewhat similar conclusion about the true nature of universe and the fact that you have written about matter being mostly empty at an atomic level is an exact thought i had( never told to anyone before this).
The question i ask from you is..does everyone( assuming all start at the same level, which thus would include me also ) who seeks a guru, finds what he is seeking? what am i to do to at least begin? thankyou.

  18. Dear r0h!t,

What you want is what you get.... be very specific when you ask for something - for instance, what is the image that appears when you feel the craving? fine tune that image to perfection. or seek to feel what you would in the presence of such a person.

You'd be surprised at how much of a difference a minute detail can make.

The very best in the quest, as always!

  19. Dear vijayoct14,

This blog is also a place to discuss such topics. You are welcome to share your query with us.

There are many here who would respond to your query with their views.

Pooja or Bhakthi? Hmm. it's interesting as a topic because it touches on the duality of our existence as a pardox to the singularity of our nature (Advaitham).

To get to the root of the discussion, one must consider what one is actually questioning. It occurred to me that the primary reason one performs a Pooja - the perceived benefit - is what is at question.

It is a question of which is efficient, and of course, the levels of rigor involved. Here's where our nature and our existence come in. As beings of infinite nature, we are capable of anything - for we are everything. However, as we exist in a human form, this nature translates to a kind of 'power' we have to effect changes to the cosmos around us. I stress on 'around us'. Mostly our powers are confined to our objectives, or lives or loved ones.

It's thanks to this 'power' that parents who care too much about their children can alienate them. It's quite tangible, very powerful, and if channelled right (AshtaangaYogaSoothra), can bring in some remarkable fetes.

It is this very 'power' that channels out as Bhakthi, and given its nature, it can override the negative affects of any mistakes in the actual ritual.

However, those whose duty it is to conduct such rituals, such as Brahmanas, would prefer to do the ritual right, because

    1) They are Brahmanas, and they are expected to be such by the cosmos or Eashwaran, which in this case translates to their Karmas as Brahmanas.

    2) Being human, even if personal issues affect their state, their perfection with the rituals will make up for it.

A good parable for a situation where ritual means nothing, and Bhakthi is everything, would be that of Kannappan Nayanar, I think...

I personally feel that rituals are a practice worth preserving for our children. I wouldn't like to see 45000 years of heritage lost.

Well, there you have it - in my opinion =) it's all in the intent, and how you carry out that intent with respect to your awareness, or your level of existence, as far as the efficiency of your ritual goes.

I'd love to hear what others have to say...

    Warmest regards

  20. Dear Ocean,

You did put forth a hard one. The absolute answer is 'Yes'. Every seeker finds the Guru. But if you'll read up on the post, the implication is that you are your own teacher, eventually.

As for what you need to do, well, 'want' it. It is said that the desire for knowledge is what brings it to you. It may not be one person, or one institution that may do it for you. It is more likely to be a series of experiences. Experiences that are paltry to another, but an epiphany to another...

They do happen, y'know =) practising what is popularly known as 'yoga' is a good way to keep yourself calm and alert while you're on the quest, my friend.

You've been through some of the older posts, and must've by now gathered that it is oneself that is one's own Eashwaran.

Warmest regards - and welcome to this gathering of seekers!

  25. Dear Ocean,

I cannot tell you how to live your life. Such decisions are made by You i.e. your Karma, and your personal views.

I appreciate the gravity of your situation, and sense your deep need for guidance - I'm unable to personally guide you as I do not run an ashram or such facilities as you require. I also keep my identity a secret, and hence cannot respond to your personal emailbox.

It is to be remembered that One is One's own Master - and no one else is. So how can anyone else teach you or do anything for you?

I might point out here that our nation has gone to the dogs simply becuase of our attitude - that someone else must do something for us to succeed!

We are responsible and empowered to change our lives.

In this respect, I remember a movie that touched me - Krantiveer - with Nana Patekar flinging it out at me - Help yourself, and the Cosmos will help you.

It makes a lot of sense to me - if YOU are the cosmos, and if YOU don't help YOURself, then who can?

I pray Eashwaran in you brings forth the power and conviction needed to take you through your Karmas.

Thank you, as always, for your contribution and comments.

    Warmest regards.

  28. Hi eLFie,

I have been following each one of your posts keenly and most of them happens to be an eye opener for me. Your scholastic words are educative.

I would like to hear from you about the "Chathurvarnyam"?
Whatever be the reason, you know this distinction have created sects within our society.
The ill effects of the caste system prevail even now in this so called civilized society.
It’s not the reservation that the ill treated ones require but a total reformation has to happen.
The missionaries and other religious intruders make use of this and get these people converted to their religion ensuring better treatment and recognition.

Is this concept of “chathur varna” and the inherent cast demarcations happened under the spell of Kali to keep the humans divided?
I hail from that part of our holy land which was described as the land of lunatics by Swami Vivekananda 
Looking forward to new posts and comments from you.

  30. Dear Karthik,

You are very kind. Knowledge is not bestowed by me or anyone else - it is bestowed by the Universe - by Yourself.

I am safe at the moment - thank you. Have just returned from a bit of a journey to save myself from the wrath of the Church...

I should be getting a post up here shortly. I hope it will be of benefit to you.

    yours in humility,
    eLFie
